ND children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities will have quality educational and early childhood services and systems that are responsive to their needs. NDCPD will provide training and technical assistance (TA) to early childhood providers throughout ND, focusing on reservation communities. Training and TA will focus on quality indicators within service systems that serve to enhance early detection and diagnosis of disabilities, and appropriate methods of early intervention in Head Start settings. The intent is to reduce the number of students misdiagnosed with disabilities in reservation communities. In addition to the TA, we will develop and test two innovative models. The first will support system efforts to provide children with diagnoses and intervention in early childhood settings. The second will support youth in exercising self-determination and decision-making during transition to adulthood.
