To
enter Kindergarten in the public school system, the following 3 requirements
must be met:
-
The child must be 5 years of age by midnight,
August 31st, of the year they are to enter Kindergarten.
-
The family must present the child’s birth
certificate.
-
The child must have a current immunization
record, or update immunizations as necessary.
It is best to visit
the kindergarten in your local school district about a year in advance
to help plan your child’s transition. Kindergarten is not mandatory in
North Dakota. Several options to ease your child into a new routine may
be available. Check with the Special
Education personnel to learn more about transition into kindergarten.
Kindergarten may differ
from preschool in the following ways:
-
A student is expected to go with the class
to several locations in the building, including the library, gym, playground,
and cafeteria.
-
If parents haven’t already done so,
some academic skills will be introduced.
-
The student will be expected to participate
and attend both large and small group activities.
-
Activities and settings must be individualized
to meet the unique educational needs of children with disabilities so that
they can benefit.
