Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need health Insurance?
You buy insurance for your home, your car, even your cell phone. Why? In case something happens, you’re covered. Your health is more important than all of those things combined. Without your health, you don’t have much. Without health insurance, you have much to lose. If something happens to you, you leave yourself vulnerable to extremely large medical bills. No one plans to get sick or hurt. But no one should go broke—or even bankrupt—because of an injury or illness.
Even if you’re healthy now, family history can also play a role in your eventual health. If things like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer run in your family, those types of health issues can happen at any time. Having quality health insurance gives you freedom to take care of yourself.
Fortunately, the Health Insurance Marketplace makes health insurance easier to understand and purchase. You can be sure that you have coverage that’s there when you need it, whenever you need it.
Without health insurance (on average):
$7,500 To fix a broken bone
$10,000/day To stay in a hospital overnight
What is Health Insurance Marketplace?
The new health care law sets up a Health Insurance Marketplace in each state, which is your one-stop shopping destination for health insurance. It works in the same way you would shop for any other important item in your life: You look at all the available options in your area, compare each plan’s features and prices side-by-side, then choose the one that’s right for you.
You can apply for your new health insurance on-line, by phone, on paper, or in-person. There’s a specific period when you can sign up for health insurance through the Marketplace, called open enrollment. If you want your new health insurance to kick in by the start of the new year, you need to have your application in by December deadline. So don’t put if off if you don’t have to!
As with anything new, you’ll probably have questions about which health insurance options might be best for you. Good news: Experts will be available to answer your questions on-line, over the phone, and in-person. These experts are trained to help you with your application and will be able to give you unbiased, honest advice about how to apply; they will help you weigh your options so you can choose a plan that works for you. Best of all, getting help with your application is free. (Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.)

The health insurance plans are grouped together in four categories so you can compare them easily: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The different plans have different levels of monthly costs and out-of-pocket costs when you get your health care services. The most expensive are the Platinum plans, which offer the most benefits and less out-of-pocket costs when you get care; while the Bronze plans have the lowest monthly costs but higher out-of-pocket expenses when you get your health care services. Do you expect a lot of doctor visits or need regular prescriptions? Then you may want to look at Platinum and Gold plans. If you don’t, Silver or Bronze plans may work for you. Whatever plan you choose, you can rest assured knowing that the plan covers the care you need.
Many people will qualify for financial help. The amount of financial assistance works on a sliding scale based on an individual or family’s income. Some people will qualify for free or low-cost health insurance through Medicaid.
If you are under 30 or if you can’t afford insurance, you might be able to get a catastrophic plan. Just know that while catastrophic plans have the lowest premiums, these plans offer limited health care services, and financial help is not available for this type of plan.
So, you see, there are many ways to find a health insurance plan that won’t break the bank.

Through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you can be sure that whatever plan you choose will cover the most important benefits like doctor visits, hospitalizations, prescriptions, maternity and infant care, mental health, and more. Many preventive services are covered, and at no cost to you.
