When a child turns 3 in North Dakota,
education services are the responsibility of the local school district.
There is transition planning prior to this, where you can discuss options
for your child. Some options you may consider:
-
Child care in an integrated community child
care setting. There will be children with and without disabilities
in the setting.
-
A self-contained, special needs classroom
within a preschool. There will be a wide range and degree of children with
disabilities found here.
-
Head Start
-
You may choose to go to the school for therapy
services only for your child, and not enroll them in preschool services.
Some commonly asked questions by parents:
“How do I find a preschool in my community?”
“What are the benefits of my child entering
preschool or staying at home?”
-
Preschool offers the child a speech and language
model other than their family.
-
The child will have a greater opportunity
to improve socialization and play skills with peers at preschool.
“How does preschool differ from child care?”
-
Child care’s primary purpose is to meet your
child’s physical and emotional needs.
-
Preschool is focused more towards goals and
objectives related to your child’s total development.
-
Childcare workers are often not trained to
reach developmental goals and objectives.
