Facts About the North Dakota Legislature

  • ND's legislature meets every other year only, unless a special session is called.
  • The legislature meets at the capitol building in Bismarck, ND.
  • ND's Legislature has 2 chambers - the house and the senate.
  • The state legislature redraws its districts after every federal census.
  • Representatives are elected to 2-year terms and senators are each elected to serve 4-year terms.
  • Members must be 18 years old, a qualified voter, and a resident of ND for one year.
To contact the legislature, check out their web site:  ND Legislative Branch.  During the interim between sessions, much activity takes place within legislative committees. To follow the work of committees by reading their minutes, go to this web site.

Information for Families

Families who want to follow legislation and find out about potential laws and committee work that may impact families are encouraged to use the Legislative Action Center, maintained by The Arc, Upper Valley. To get further information, you can subscribe to the Action E-List at the same site and receive bulletins and notices about pending action.
