System
Change Groups/Activities
Several other system change groups are
active in North Dakota. These include:
People
First of North Dakota - This is a self advocacy group that
serves people with disabilities. Many members have cognitive disabilities
and learn how to speak up about respect, accessibility and the use of people
first language.
Legislative
Working Groups - Sponsored by both the ND Protection and Advocacy Project
and People First of ND, these groups are coordinated regionally by advocates
and other volunteers who are interested in following ND legislation that
will impact children with disabilities. They provide training on how to
present a bill or give testimony, track and provide timely information
about key bills. They also help groups organize themselves to invite key
speakers and address issues of concern.
The
Arc Governmental Affairs Forum - Held in the fall, prior to a legislative
session, this workshop provides families with valuable training about impacting
the legislature in North Dakota to advocate for children with special needs.
The ND
Association of Community Facilities - While membership in this group
is limited to representatives of adult and children service providers,
they often work with the Department of Human Services and the ND Legislature
on important issues that impact families and consumers with disabilities.
They are important allies for families in addressing many issues that impact
people with disabilities.
The ND
Disability Advocacy Consortium - This group, comprised of many primary
and secondary consumers, has joined the resources of various advocacy organizations
in North Dakota to present a common platform and plan of action to the
legislature. Although families cannot join this organization directly,
they can become involved through membership in various family support or
advocacy groups.
The Children's Caucus - This group
is comprised of family members and professionals across North Dakota who
advocate for issues impacting all children, including children with disabilities.
