Along with participants, a second group is needed to make the project a success. That's where you come in. Your group will be made up of
volunteer exercise partners. The goal is to establish two partners for every participant. As an exercise partner you main duty will be
assisting the project participants with their exercise routine, along with helping participants record their workout results.
How Do I Get Involved?
The first step is to contact your local participating site for information on the volunteer process.
Let them know that you are interested in participating in the Distance Wellness Project. The staff will be able to get you started. If you
have questions feel free to contact the NDCPD office for more information at (800) 233-1737.
What Will I Do as an Exercise Partner?
As a Volunteer Exercise partner, your first duty will be to participate in program training sessions. These sessions will cover: how to
implement the exercise programs, how to use motivational techniques correctly, and how to submit exercise records on the computer. Exercise
partners will serve as the on-site facilitators for the exercise program. You will become an "exercise buddy" for the participants, joining
them in their exercise routine, helping them complete that routine correctly, and motivating the participant with your presence. A second
responsibility of the volunteers will be to help the participants keep their online exercise log up to date and accurate.
How Will This Help People?
The idea of using an exercise partner for motivation is not a new one. In fact, it is one of the most effective forms of motivation available.
Almost everyone has an easier time getting to their workout if someone else is counting on them to be there. In fact, volunteers may
experience some of the same motivational (and physical!) benefits from this project as the participants.
